I’ve lived in Southern California’s San Bernardino County for more than 30 years. My wife and I moved from greater Los Angeles to a home near Lake Arrowhead, a community in the San Bernardino Mountains with a four-season climate. Elevation here is above five thousand feet and with some incredible views as you drive along Highway 18, also known as the historic Rim of the World Highway.
We raised a family, all now grown and on their own. For us, traveling around San Bernardino County was usually limited to some destination within what’s called the Inland Empire. If we ventured any distance usually it was along one of the major state or interstate highways that run though the county because we were heading to a destination beyong the county line.
But in the past couple of years I have spent more time exploring my own county, and I’m finding some wonderful places to visit. This year I’ve been writing about some of my adventures for the county’s Economic Development Agency and you can see my blogs by clicking here.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, as the old idiom goes, and I believed it. When I gave thought to a vacation or long weekend getaway, it was always outside of my county. Of course, we’ve visited some great places in California, such as San Francisco, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Diego and several state and national parks.
Visiting the American West is a big favorite of mine, and I have wonderful memories of seeing the Grand Canyon, the big national parks in Utah, Wyoming’s Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, and many other natural wonders and historic towns.
But what about in my own backyard, in San Bernardino County, the largest county in the U.S.? Oops. Didn’t spend much time here, I’m afraid. Well, now I’m making up for it. I’ll be writing about my personal discoveries in my own backyard in the weeks and months ahead.
See you out there.
